Moisturizing Lotion
One of the most important steps used to medicate an eczema infected skin is to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Therefore it becomes necessary to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day. Lotions used to treat eczema skin conditions have high water content and the lotion would need to be applied a few times a day unlike ointments which have more percentage of oil in them.  Your dermatologist would ask you to moisturize your skin immediately after a bath when the skin is wet. This would nourish the skin and also lock the moisture in the skin and would prevent dryness in your skin. When investing in a moisturizing lotion you should check the ingredients of the lotion.  Best lotion for eczema would contain substances which are not harmful and also have no strong smell or synthetic color. Both the above elements would cause your eczema affected the skin to get irritated and cause you discomfort. The American Academy of Dermatologists advises people suffering from eczema to use large amount of moisturizing lotion during the season when humidity is low.
Lotions containing Corticosteroids
Topical corticosteroids in lotion form are also used for eczema treatment. Many over the counter products are available which has hydrocortisone in them. But if you have advanced conditions of eczema you would need lotions which have strong contents of corticosteroids. It is important that these lotions are used for short durations and used to give immediate relief. When these lotions are used for long periods the patient would suffer from side effects.  These side effects could be high blood pressure, weakening of the immunity system and skin thinning conditions.
This is another type of prescribed medication. Immunomodulators can be used directly on the affected area.  A few common ones available in the market are Elidel and Protopic. These reduce eczema flare ups and affect the immunity system of the patient’s body. FDA has approved its usage only in cases when other treatments have failed for the patient suffering from eczema.
